The City of Sunshine, with over 2100 hours of sunshine each year, is situated at the junction between Tisza and Maros rivers, near the southern border of Hungary.

The city owes its origin to the river, but the river has also been its ruin. In 1879 a flood known by the residents simply as “the water” destroyed the old Szeged in just one night. After the flood, several foreign cities contributed at rebuilding Szeged. Out of gratitude, its Ring Boulevards bear the names of these cities.

The most famous building of Szeged and its symbol is the Votive Church in Dóm Square. The city council decided to build this church one year afer the ‘water’. The purpose of the Church is to protect the city from further floods.

The organ, consisting of more than ten thousand pipes, makes the church an ideal place for excellent concerts. During excavations for the building of the Votive Church, the oldest building of Szeged was discovered: Dömötör Tower from between the 11th and 13th centuries.

Szeged is famous for its colourful history, its interesting sight both banks of the Tisza River, the spice paprika and more.
