Is it safe to visit Transylvania, Romania?
According to the Global Terrorist Database, Romania ranks at 138/163 countries. This certifies that essentially no terrorist attacks have occurred here. If we look further, at different rankings, we can also discover that we are on position 22/163 on the Global Peace Index (which is based on militarization, society, security, domestic and interest conflict).
In Romania, the crime rate is lower than the European average – at least according to various studies. You don’t have to worry about criminals pointing weapons at you in the streets; even muggings are very rare. One thing you will most likely encounter in our country is corruption. If you find yourself in a situation where authorities are offering a ‘mutually beneficial’ solution, you should refuse the agreement and seek legal justification.
Need to Know before traveling to Romania
- Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
- Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
- Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
- See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
- Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
- Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.
Driving
If you book a Vampire or Halloween itinerary, your transfer between attractions is included in the price. However, you might want to extend your stay on your own terms, in which case you will need to arrange transportation. If you plan on visiting several places, the best course of action is to rent a car instead of purchasing several bus tickets or paying a lot of money for taxi rides.
Inside cities, pay attention at the surrounding traffic. Many drivers lose their patience and break the law (illegal overtakes, crossing red lights), so you need to be extra careful to avoid an unwanted incident. If you intend to go on a drive, make sure you plan ahead and discover where parking lots are located. Otherwise, you might find yourself wasting a lot of time searching for a free parking spot.
Pickpocketing
As mentioned before, muggings are rare in our country. However, you may run into pickpockets. They usually operate in crowded areas – buses or the subway. Always keep your belongings withing eyesight. Otherwise, you might find your purse cut open and emptied. Experienced pickpockets are able to do this without you noticing until it’s too late.
Another valuable advice is to keep the most valuable items you bring along in the hotel safe when possible.
According to Romanian Laws:
- Always carry photo ID – you should keep the original passport or ID card somewhere safe and carry photocopies with you
- You are prohibited from taking photos of airports, military sites or other secure locations (this includes drones – be careful, as you might have a non-pleasant surprise if you accidentally fly a drone in military airspace)
- Penalties for drug offences are severe. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail. Authorities are focusing more on finding the dealers rather than the users, but it’s always best to avoid getting in trouble
Travel Insurance
While a lot of people fail to understand the importance of travel insurance, you should know that it can save you from a lot of trouble. For instance, you may find yourself in need of medical services. Your own healthcare plan most likely does not cover other countries, so you will end up having to pay for the expensive services. However, a good travel insurance covers this cost for you, allowing yourself to keep enjoying your holiday.

The Price of Food in Romania
If you visit Transylvania during our itineraries, you should know that the price includes one or two meals per day. Therefore, we provide breakfast (served at each hotel you will be staying at) and dinner. However, you may want to eat something other than the included menu or enjoy lunch on your own account. In these cases, you should know that the average price for meals in Romania is 104 lei/day according to Budget Your Trip. This website helps you discover the costs in foreign countries and plan a budget before departing.
The estimated average cost mentioned above is for 3 meals/day. However, your breakfasts and dinners will most likely be included in the price of the tour. This means that your food expenses will be significantly lower.
While meal prices in Romania can vary, the average cost of food in Romania is lei104 per day. Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Romania should cost around lei41 per person. Breakfast prices are usually a little cheaper than lunch or dinner. The price of food in sit-down restaurants in Romania is often higher than fast food prices or street food prices.
Budget Your Trip
Visit Transylvania – Transportation Costs in Romania
Our tours include transfers between the included highlights. We provide either a car, a minibus or a coach depending on the size of your group.
If you want to set off on your own and explore the cities included in your itinerary or if you decide to extend your stay, you will need to either rent a car or use public transportation.
A rental car is perfect if you intend to visit several destinations. Using public transportation for this purpose can get quite expensive and you’d most likely have to constantly switch buses. Meanwhile, using taxis to travel between multiple places will result in an exorbitant sum on the meter at the end.
Buses and Taxis
You can use buses to move around the city as well. If you are interested in several objectives located around the city center, a bus might be a better solution than a rental car. This way, you won’t have to waste time looking for a parking spot and you won’t have to face the usually very crowded traffic. While on a bus, pay attention at the people surrounding you and keep your belongings within eyesight to avoid being robbed by pickpockets.
Taxis are more expensive, but they get you exactly where you have to go and you avoid the crowds usually present in buses. When choosing a taxi, keep in mind that, amongs the good drivers, you may encounter scammers who attempt one of two things:
- circle you around (since you are foreign, they rely on the fact that you don’t know the city) in order to increase the sum on the meter
- they negotiate the cost for the ride before you enter the car – avoid these kids of drivers as you will end up paying a lot more than the ride is worth. They usually try to convince you to let them keep the meter off. Our advice is to move on from drivers who behave like this
Besides taxis, you can also use a ride-sharing app like Uber or Taxify. These show you the cost for your ride in advance and the payment is done online. The drivers are therefore not allowed to charge you themselves.
