How Much Does Food Cost in Romania
Our itineraries usually include two meals per day: dinners and breakfasts. On some days, the schedule allows for a short window during which you can enjoy lunch on your own account. For this reason, we provide you with the average food costs to help you plan your budget.
We recommend Budget Your Trip, a website which provides average costs in various countries based on how much travelers spend on food, drinks or accommodation. According to this site, the average price of food in Romania is 104 lei/day. This is based on three meals per day, so you will most likely spend a lot less if you only have lunch outside the meals we provide.
While meal prices in Romania can vary, the average cost of food in Romania is lei104 per day. Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Romania should cost around lei41 per person. Breakfast prices are usually a little cheaper than lunch or dinner. The price of food in sit-down restaurants in Romania is often higher than fast food prices or street food prices.

Transport costs for Family Holidays Romania
While visiting Transylvania on a Vampire or Halloween Tour organized by our team, you don’t need to worry about transfer costs. We include a car, minibus or coach (depending on group size), which will take you to each of the included attractions.
If you intend to extend your stay and visit attractions not included in the itinerary on your own, you have several options for transportation: rent a car, use taxis or travel via bus or subway.
Buses are the cheapest option. Keep in mind that you might need to switch them on route and you have to wait for each bus in a designated station. Furthermore, public transportation – buses, trams or the subway – is usually very crowded and attracts shady individuals such as pickpockets.
A taxi is more expensive than a bus and the cost can get quite high depending on how many destinations you have in mind. While it’s more comfortable and private than a crowded bus, a taxi comes with risks as well. Some drivers will attempt to make extra money off of you by circling you around and artificially increase the sum on the meter. Others will attempt to negotiate a fare upfront and keep the meter off. Note that the price they propose is usually a lot larger than what the ride is legally worth.
Alternatively, you can choose a ridesharing app like Uber or Taxify. These display the cost of the ride the moment you request it. Therefore, the drivers have no control over the price.
Is it safe to visit Romania?
Several databases rank Romania on positions which confirm that our country is safe for tourists. For instance, the Global Peace Index, which accounts for militarization, society, security, as well as domestic and interest conflict, ranks us on position 22/163. Meanwhile, Romania is on position 138/163 on the Global Terrorist Database, which means that no terrorist attacks have occured here.
Crime rate is at a low level in Romania and the streets are safe for tourists. Muggings rarely occur and people are not allowed to carry weapons on themselves. However, you may encounter corruption, which, unfortunately is still wide spread in our country. In a situation where authorities propose a ‘mutually beneficial’ solution which seems out of place, you should refuse such agreements and seek legal justification.
Need to Know before traveling on Family Holidays Romania
- Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
- Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
- Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
- See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
- Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
- Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.
Driving
We include transfers between all the attractions available on our tours. Therefore, if you choose to explore Transylania during the planned itinerary only, you should be covered. However, if you choose to extend your stay and drive yourself around, we have some advice you should consider.
- Inside cities, you will most likely encounter heavy traffic especially at rush hours. Some drivers are impatient and break the law by performing illegal overtakes or crossing red lights. Pay extra attention to your surroundings and you should not have any problems.
- Parking spots can be very hard to find inside cities. You should plan in advance and find out where is the nearest parking lot to your destination. In case you can’t find a free parking spot in the area, you will be able to reach the most convenient parking lot and leave the car there.
- Outside cities, we rely mostly on National Roads (DN) because we have few highways and they only cover a portion of our country. National Roads usually pass through a lot of villages where you can encounter carts or animals on the road.
Pickpocketing
While in Romania, the risk of getting mugged is almost non-existent. However, there are pickpockets lurking in crowded areas such as buses, trams of the subway. The best advice we can give you is to always keep your belongings within eyesight. This tactic usually discourages pickpockets from trying anything.
A skilled pickpocket can cut your bag open and disappear with your belongings before you can understand what happened. Some of them are also capable of stealing directly from your pocket without alerting you. The safest thing you can do is leave your most valuable items in the hotel safe and carry around essential items only.
According to Romanian Laws:
- Always carry photo ID – you should keep the original passport or ID card somewhere safe and carry photocopies with you
- You are prohibited from taking photos of airports, military sites or other secure locations (this includes drones – be careful, as you might have a non-pleasant surprise if you accidentally fly a drone in military airspace)
- Penalties for drug offences are severe. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail. Authorities are focusing more on finding the dealers rather than the users, but it’s always best to avoid getting in trouble
Travel Insurance
You should always get travel insurance before leaving your country. Having a good insurance can save you from a lot of trouble should something unexpected happen during your travels. For instance, medical services can get quite expensive outside your own country and your health plan might not apply internationally. In this case, the expenses will be covered by your insurer, saving you from having to pay a large bill on the spot.
